'Are You Guys Okay? Should We Send Rice?' - IMF Texts Ghana about Low Independence Day Budget

Government’s decision to scale down Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebration was presented as prudent cost-saving. Ghanaish understands the move also triggered an emergency emotional welfare check from the International Monetary Fund, which reportedly texted: “Are you guys okay? Should we send rice?”

The celebration, moved to Jubilee House with a much smaller budget, was intended to show fiscal discipline. But after years of being told to spend less, Ghana had apparently reduced the bill so sharply that its lender began to suspect the country was not economising but quietly suffering.

Officials insisted the smaller ceremony did not reduce the importance of Independence Day. It only reduced chairs, buses, uniforms, food, movement, spectacle and the national tendency to solve memory with logistics. The IMF, touched by the austerity, is said to be monitoring future anniversaries closely in case Ghana begins celebrating Republic Day with one rechargeable speaker and a borrowed flag.
